Frequently Asked Questions

Milestone sessions are available for any age child, but are created specifically for babies through preschool aged children. Each session type is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing me to tailor the experience to your child’s stage and temperament.

Rather than focusing strictly on calendar milestones, sessions are designed to meet children where they are developmentally. Every age brings its own rhythm, temperament, and way of engaging with the camera.

If you’re curious about how I approach photographing different stages, you can read more here:

Photographing 4–6 Year Olds →

Rather than scheduling milestone photos around exact ages, I recommend photographing babies when meaningful developmental changes occur.

Some families choose sessions when their baby is confidently lifting their head during tummy time, sitting independently, pulling up to stand, or celebrating their first birthday. These moments often tell a richer story than a specific month on the calendar.

Because every baby develops differently, milestone sessions are designed to follow your child’s growth rather than a fixed timeline.

You can read more about this approach here:
When to Schedule Baby’s First Year →

For most babies and young children, morning sessions tend to work best.

Earlier in the day, children usually have more emotional and physical capacity — they haven’t yet moved through multiple transitions, errands, social interactions, or nap disruptions. Starting the session before the day accumulates helps children remain curious, flexible, and connected.

When a child begins with more margin, the entire session tends to feel calmer and more natural.

You can read more about why I often recommend mornings here:
Why I Almost Always Recommend Morning Sessions →

Milestone sessions are primarily designed to celebrate one child.

Siblings are welcome and may be included in a handful of images, but the primary focus remains on the milestone child.

If you’re hoping for sibling-focused or full family portraits, a family session is usually a better fit for that dynamic.

The studio offers a curated wardrobe designed to photograph beautifully, with options for babies, children and parents. You’ll receive guidance on styling to keep everything cohesive, soft, and timeless.

Yes. One optional specialty focus can be included per session.

For Milestone Classic sessions, the specialty set takes place at the very end of the session and does not replace traditional portraits.

For Milestone Mini sessions, the specialty set uses the full session time, so the images will focus entirely on that experience.

Children must be sitting confidently and unassisted for milk bath portraits.

That’s completely normal. Many one-year-olds approach cake cautiously, especially if it’s their first taste of frosting.

The cake smash always happens at the very end of the session, after we’ve already captured portraits of your baby and family. If your child explores the cake gently — or decides they’re not interested at all — that’s perfectly okay.

Nothing is forced. We follow your baby’s lead and keep the experience playful and calm.

That’s completely expected.

Young children move through moods, curiosity, and shifting attention quickly. Sessions are designed to follow their pace rather than push against it.

If a child needs movement, a break, a cuddle, or time to warm up, we simply allow space for that. Often those in-between moments become the most genuine photographs.

You don’t need to manage your child’s behavior — I’ll guide the session and adapt as we go.

Learn more about The Protected Experience →

The most natural photographs happen when children feel calm and familiar with the experience. In the days leading up to your session, it can help to mention it casually, protect sleep and routines, and focus on connection rather than performance.

Children don’t need to practice smiling or posing — simply arriving rested and supported is enough.

How to Prepare Your Child for a Calm Photo Session →

Yes. All sessions include fully edited digital images delivered through a private online gallery. You’ll receive high-resolution files for printing and web-sized images for sharing. There are no required product purchases or hidden fees.

Yes. Designing first-year albums is one of my favorite projects.

Many families choose to document several milestones during baby’s first year and then preserve the story together in a custom heirloom album. I offer album design services to help families turn those images into something lasting and meaningful.
